Abundance – What is it and how do I get it?
by Richard Stammler    © Rich Stammler, 2008

Abundance and how to get it into my life are something I have thought a lot about. I grew up in Europe under extreme conditions of violence, hardship and scarcity (WWII). We know that an infant will soak up the psychological and physical environment and that these early experiences can shape the rest of life. A transpersonal psychotherapist will tell you that this dynamic started much earlier, in a past life, but we don’t need to get into that now.

The influence of those early years did have a powerful effect on me that directly translates into issues of abundance. If I want to solve this set of deep seated beliefs about abundance and their manifestation in my life, I have to understand what those beliefs are and how to substitute more productive thoughts.

At the core of transpersonal therapy is the notion that when you release the energy that is blocked or bound up by ineffective beliefs, that energy then automatically becomes available to create those things and events you want to come into your life. Therefore, negative beliefs about abundance hinder getting it. In my case there were a number of beliefs that conspired against abundance.

One, as I mentioned above, was an almost destitute early childhood which generates beliefs that this is the way reality is for me, and therefore the expectation is that is the way it “should” be. The second is parental role models that said, the only way to get ahead is to work hard, nothing is free or necessarily easy. Therefore, abundance does not come easily and sweat, literally and metaphorically, is the way to approach it.

The third is something never directly articulated but an underlying belief nonetheless with powerful influences. That belief arose from a religion that says you should not have much more than the fellow next to you and that excess, however that is defined, is selfish, if not sinful. This kind of belief stems from early childhood and forms a broad structure literally limiting what is possible.

So what is this abundance? Well, many will first define this as having money and other financial resources. There is nothing wrong with that and it can be a valuable goal but is a limited definition of abundance. Abundance is richness in your reality, richness of resources, which can include money but may be other resources such as time. How about richness in creativity? Richness of love or relationships? How about richness of knowledge and insight? All of these can lead to richness in life that can be deeply meaningful to the individual.

One thing to understand is that true abundance for one person does not take away anything from another. This is a worldview of scarcity and fear that I admit is held by many today but to which I do not (now) subscribe. Quite to the contrary. By creating your reality with increased richness of objects, increased quality of life, and increased psychic value, you learn to create more effectively, which contributes to the development of mankind. By adding to the knowledge you possess it is yours forever added to that available to all men. By creating love, you add not only to your abundance, you add to the abundance of all mankind.

So one of your lessons in this reality is to learn how to create abundance in every way and share that abundance.

This business of abundance can be pretty complex. It isn’t that it has to be that way but many of us make it that way through limiting beliefs we talked about earlier. There is an interesting book at one time on the best seller list called The Courage to be Rich by Suze Ormond. The subtitle is “Creating a Life of Material and Spiritual Abundance.” I have not read the book but from the title I can guess its message. There are many like it, some under the heading of “motivational literature.” It is talking to what has been expressed here. This is also what the recent popular book, The Secret, is all about: the secret is that your thoughts attract a like reality.

Have you ever met or known a person for whom things fall apart just when they are on the cusp of success or fulfillment? Their life is one continuous sad story. I am willing to bet, if you get to know what that person truly believes, you will find a personal belief that says they do not deserve success or happiness. Often this viewpoint originates from a turbulent childhood, perhaps due to an abusive parent, to alcoholism, or some other cause. Sometimes in this situation you will discover the loss of a parent, possibly through divorce or death. The conclusion that is drawn unconsciously and the belief that is held is that the parent left on purpose, that the child is not loved and does not deserve love, happiness, and success. And due to that belief they replicate that line of logic throughout their lives whether true, in fact, or not.

Change the belief and reality is changed.

If you are a constant worrier cut it out! Stop! Your thoughts attract like energy. But whatever the case, your thoughts attract the reality that is consistent with the thoughts. The key is to substitute the thoughts consistent with the reality you want to create. Sometimes it takes the help of a transpersonal therapist to get at the root beliefs.

So when you work on creating abundance for yourself, create money; this will provide considerable freedom. But seek/create the other riches as well. Create the richness of appreciation for the mystery and grandeur of all being. Seek richness in your relationships, be they family, friends or coworkers. It is that richness that brings awareness of the complexity and the multidimensionality that is you. It leads to the richness of understanding what and who you are and where you fit in this grand and wonderful universe. Then share your abundance. After all, you get what you give.
